When I saw the trailer for this film I had a feeling that two things were going to happen, one, I was going to witness a violent film, and two, it would be hilarious and revitalize the career of Ryan Reynolds. Well it was violent and I hope it does revitalize the career of one of my favorites in Reynolds but what I was not expecting was all of the sex. I am not just talking about the actual sex acts, which there was a lot in the beginning, but also all the swearing about shoving it into so many holes and bullets getting shot everywhere. I was expecting an R rated film but this was one of the hardest R films I have seen in a long time and not only does the film not suffer from it but actually benefits from it.
Wade Wilson, played by Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern,) is an ex Special Forces soldier who rights wrongs for the innocent, for the right price. In his own words he isn’t a good guy but he is a bad guy who goes after worse ones. While at his local bar her runs into a female sexual machine in Vanessa, played by the ultra-hot Morena Baccarin (Serenity) and over the course of the next year of wild sex they fall in love and plan on getting married. However fate steps in and he is diagnosed with terminal cancer. While trying to figure out what to do he is given an offer of not only a potential cure but also the gift of super abilities. Not wanting to tell Vanessa in case it fails Wilson heads off to a secret complex run by an man named Francis, or Ajax, if you will, played by Ed Skrein (The Transporter Refueled,) where he discovers that they use different drugs and torture techniques to trigger a mutation in the body to heal him as well as give him powers. But instead of being a good guy they plan on making him a bad guy. Wilson’s mutation does heal him but horribly disfigures him so he spends all of his energy in hunting down Ajax to force Ajax to change his looks back.
Before I get into the sex and violence of the film I would like to mention the humor first. Almost the entire movie has voice over which drives the humor as well as the constant breaking of the fourth wall which normally you are supposed to do in a film but happens here a lot. And its purpose is almost as if its inside the skeptical viewers head finding things to complain about and then turning it on them. The best example I can give is towards the end of the film Deadpool head to the X-Men house to get help and only finds the two X-Men who have been helping, sort of, Deadpool for parts of the movie. Deadpool knocks on the door and the female X-man answers the door and he says:
“Wow, this is such a big house, but it’s only the two of you here. It’s like the studio didn’t have enough money for another X-Men movie.”
That statement is hilarious and shows where the humor is coming from and how it works and boy does it and it’s the entire film with stuff like this peppered in it. Its not all the time of course but when it is used the timing is perfect.
Sex. Boy in the beginning there is a lot of it and while I have to put up seeing Ryan Reynolds ass all the time, you get a lot of Morena Baccarin as well (which should drive the fans of the TV show Firefly wild.) And this is really where we get are hard R rating. In this first 30 minutes we get to see them having sex in all sorts of places, surrounded by humor, and in particular a scene which implies , hell almost shows, Reynolds character…how can I put this to be somewhat classy and not vulgar…Reynolds character was catching while Baccarin character was pitching, and it showed on his face. My curiosity is when these kinds of movies are made and brought to the sensors they usually have to film even more over the top scenes in order for the sensors to have something to cut in order bring it down to the R rating they wanted. So what is on the cutting room floor and is any of it of Baccarin and can I have it? Of course as I said this isn’t the only thing, just the sex itself, I mean. There is also lots of masturbation talk and of course there is the scene where we get to see the shadowed junk of Ryan Reynolds as he is fighting Ajax.
The fight scenes are ridiculous and they are fun. They are a combination of two movies I loved about 10 years ago, Shoot‘em up and Smokin’ Aces, which if you haven’t seen those movies, for shame, and they are basically violent 80’s movies that were done a little over the top so people’s feelings wouldn’t be hurt. However there are also some typical super hero fights as well.
So if you want to bring your child with you to see this fine film I would put the cut off at maybe 14 or 15. There is a good chance that they have seen or heard most of it in high school so I wouldn’t be too worried and I would say definitely not for those under the age of 10. But I have no kids so what do I know.
Obviously this film is super for Ryan Reynolds. It allows his personality to come out and just shine as Deadpool. This is the same level typecasting as is Robert Downey Jr. for Iron Man. He is awesome at the timed quick witted come backs and his voice is loaded with sarcasm and this is the kind of film that made me cheer the guy on ten years ago.
So, lots of violence, lots of sex, topless Morena Baccarin, and wholesome fun make for a great movie. At last I saw, which is Sunday night after opening, the movie broke records for biggest box office opening for Valentine’s Day/ President’s weekend. So I would expect the movie studios will start digging up the hard R comic book heroes to make another Deadpool style movie. Of Course I am sure we will have a Deadpool 2 and possible have him in a future X-Men movie. Interesting side note, the final battle between Deadpool and Ajax takes place on what looks like the beginning stages of one of those heli-carriers that are used in the MCU that we saw a lot in Avengers and Captain America: Winter Soldier. It makes me wonder if we will finally get a meeting of the two universes in the future.
P.S. Normally I provide a trailer for those of you to see the film if you haven’t. Since it is so prominent in the film I will provide links to the clean trailer and the hardcore rated R trailer.
